Well, the Marathon symbol on it gives me a pretty strong suspicion it's a Forerunner planet. Then again, some have theorized that Halo itself is supposed to be a prequel to Marathon. A super-soldier gets abandoned in an old ship, etc. There are too many canonical errors for it to actually be true, but I think that's what Bungie was really trying to accomplish...a homage to Marathon. For me, that's a good enough ending for the Halo series.
Hell, if Bungie's next project is a Marathon sequel, that would be even cooler.
